Brais Ninguén & Couto 90 present the vinyl edition of their debut album, Roots and Shadows. Originally released digitally at the end of 2025, the record emerges as a bold statement within the roots reggae scene, challenging the genre’s expectations without abandoning its essence.
Across ten tracks, Roots and Shadows builds a sonic universe that draws on psychedelic, jazz, and even progressive influences, resulting in a rich, deep work with a strong identity of its own.
In terms of its message, Brais Ninguén & Couto 90 embark on a journey exploring the forces that define us as individuals and as a society. On one hand, the “roots”: what connects us to the essential, keeps us grounded, and drives us to build a fairer world. On the other, the “shadows”: the dynamics that alienate us, reduce us to cogs in a dehumanizing system, or push us toward predatory behavior.
In this project, the music takes full control. The focus lies on musicality—melody, rhythm, and harmony—allowing each composition to breathe and evolve freely, moving away from rigid structures and predictable formulas.
The album was recorded in the isolated setting of the rural studio Escusalla Sonora in Galicia, through an organic process centered on live performance. Bass, drums, and guitar were tracked simultaneously, capturing the band’s raw, authentic energy, far from artificiality and overproduction.
Roots and Shadows is built on classic reggae instrumentation—horn sections, Hammond organ, clavinet, guitars, bass, drums, and vocal harmonies—yet with a clear exploratory spirit. The result is a seventies-inspired aesthetic transformed into a contemporary proposal: deeper, more expansive, and more personal.
Roots and Shadows, already available on digital platforms, is now also released on vinyl, which can be purchased on Bandcamp and Discogs.
