Harrison Stafford Unveils ‘Candle Burning’. A New Chapter in Groundation’s Legacy

After nearly three decades of making music, Harrison Stafford calls Candle Burning one of his proudest works yet. This new Groundation album, set for release on May 23rd, is recorded straight to 2” analog tape at ICP Studios in Brussels, will capture the warmth, depth, and raw musicianship that have defined the band’s sound. But beyond the technical brilliance, Candle Burning stands apart because of its message—one that shifts from exposing the world’s injustices to embracing hope, light, and the fragility of life itself.

As we told you earlier this week, The album’s journey starts with “Energy”, a track that emerges from darkness, setting the tone for an exploration of two types of light—the eternal light of love and hope, and the individual flame that burns within each of us. As the album unfolds, it reminds us that while our own candle will one day go out, we must protect it, share it, and keep it strong. This powerful narrative builds toward the final track, “Anew”, where a fading one-drop groove slows until the last saxophone breath blows out the candle—but not as an ending. Instead, it signals rebirth and renewal of spirit.

Collaboration with Reggae & World Music Icons
Adding to the weight of this project, Harrison shared that, Candle Burning features four legendary voices, each a cornerstone of global music:

  • Alpha Blondy – The Ivorian reggae pioneer who shaped the African reggae sound.
  • Mutabaruka – The fearless dub poet, known for his revolutionary spoken word.
  • Mykal Rose – The Grammy-winning Black Uhuru frontman, a defining voice in roots reggae.
  • Thomas Mapfumo – The Chimurenga music legend who brought Zimbabwe’s mbira sound to the world stage, even performing before Bob Marley at Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980.

Together, these icons, combined with Groundation’s signature musicianship, create an album that transcends genres, generations, and borders—a deeply intentional piece of art that seeks to offer light in uncertain times.

Candle Burning isn’t just another release—it’s a movement, a meditation, a message. With its historical collaborations, masterful compositions, and deeply reflective storytelling, this album stands as one of Groundation’s most significant contributions to reggae and world music. As Candle Burning prepares to light up the world, this is an album that demands to be heard
