Keith Poppin’s “Bad Mind Grudgeful” Reissued on Vinyl After 55 Years

The timeless sound of Keith Poppin is back! A real reggae fans/collectors treat: the first-ever studio recordings by Keith Poppin, now available on a limited-edition 7-inch vinyl in random colors. The release features the 1968 tracks “Bad Mind Grudgeful” and “Wailing Time”, recorded with Studio One’s legendary Sound Dimension band under the guidance of producer Coxsone Dodd.

A Journey Back to the Roots of Reggae
Born Keith Smith in Westmoreland, Jamaica, in May 1949, Keith Poppin found his passion for music through the church choir. At 17, he moved to Kingston, where he launched his first band, The Robins, and began working with Coxsone Dodd at Studio One. Two of their tracks were featured on the classic album Rock Steady Coxsone Style, though the songwriting credits were incorrectly attributed to Winston & The Robins.

The Robins disbanded soon after, but Keith Poppin’s musical journey was far from over. He formed The Rocking Horse, collaborating with producers like Keith and Clive Chin and Lee “Scratch” Perry between 1971 and 1974. By the mid-1970s, Keith began to make his mark as a solo artist, teaming up with producer Phill Pratt to release his debut album Envious in 1975. The album featured a reimagined version of “Bad Mind Grudgeful,” giving it new life and cementing its place in reggae history.

A Legacy That Lives On
Keith Poppin continued to build his career, recording two more albums before taking a break. In 1987, he returned to the spotlight with “In My Hometown,” which earned him a spot in the finals of the Jamaican Song Festival. After relocating to the USA in 1993, Keith continued to record, releasing three more albums, with the latest, Speak Out, arriving in 2020.

In an interview with Reggae Vibes, Keith reflected on his enduring passion for music: “Well, you know what? I’m a singer (…) and that feeling is always there!” Now, over 55 years later, the classic tracks “Bad Mind Grudgeful” and “Wailing Time” are available again, reintroducing the world to one of reggae’s pioneering voices.

This beautifully pressed 7-inch is more than just a record—it’s a slice of reggae history. Backed by Jackie MittooLeroy Sibbles, and the rest of Sound Dimension, the songs bring the golden era of reggae to life once more. Don’t miss the chance to own this limited-edition reissue.
