Eerder deze week, toen ik de nieuwe videoclip van zijn song ”Distance” publiceerde schreef ik dat ik ook een interview zou afnemen met de reggae artiest Smiley. Inmiddels heb ik dit gedaan en heb ik aardig wat vragen aan Smiley gesteld. Lees hieronder het volledige interview van Sander Nesta aan Smiley !!
1. Voor de mensen die Smiley nog niet kennen de vraag, wie is de artiest Smiley en hoe omschrijf je jezelf?
I am a reggae artist, I was born on Aruba, I am a humble person promoting good vibes and truth, and I love to entertain the audience.
2. Je bent geboren in Aruba en op een jonge leeftijd, 20 jaar naar Nederland verhuist. Was je op Aruba ook al met muziek bezig of is dat pas in Nederland gekomen. En was het moeilijk om je aan te passen aan de Nederlandse levensstijl/ muziek scene.?
I came to Holland when I was 20, and I started making music at the age of 16, that time I used to make zouk (kadans music) with a lil ragga twist , which is very popular on the Islands, when I came to Holland it was a whole different scene for me ,it was cold and everybody is on the move, while on the Island it’s warm and everybody takes their time
3. En hoe ben je eigenlijk in het reggae wereldje terecht gekomen?
At the age of 18 I started to listen to more reggae Music , bands like Israel vibration, Bob Marley, Burning spear and many more, this had an influence on me, and so I started to go deeper into reggae music and it’s culture.
4. Je hebt onlangs je nieuwste tune ‘’Distance’’ uitgebracht en hier ook een mooie videoclip bij gemaakt. Waar gaat deze song over en wat is de boodschap van de song ‘’Distance’’.
The song distance is about the separation of a man from his Empress and child ,and he would love to put aside all the trouble and reunite, the message of the song is that if you try hard enough and you really want something in this case it is to be reunited with your love ones, you can always work it out.
5. Je eerdere single ‘’Dem a Wonder’’ met de beroemde reggae artiest Junior Kelly zorgde ervoor dat je in een klap bekend geworden ben in de internationale reggae scene. Je bent voor het opnemen van de videoclip speciaal naar Jamaica gevlogen. Hoe heb je deze periode ervaren? En hoe was het om samen te werken met zo’n grote artiest als Junior Kelly?
I had a great time in Jamaica, the vibes was great and it was an honor to work with such an artist like Junior Kelly, who I looked up to. He was very willing and supportive of this project.
6. Heb je nog wat geleerd van de artiest Junior Kelly?
Yes, of course; what I learned from Kelly is that the music business is a tuff business and you must grow a thick skin if you want to survive.
7. Vorig jaar ben je mee gaan touren met je collega artiest Ziggi ter promotie van zijn nieuwe album ‘’In Transit’’. Hoe is het gekomen dat jij in het voorprogramma stond en hoe voelde het om zo vaak op het podium te staan?
Me and Ziggi go way back, we know each other from our high school days, back on the island. Ziggi was planning his tour and we both agreed it would be a good idea for me to join the tour. I love to be on stage and over the years I’ve gained a lot of experienced doing that, so it felt like home, being on stage.
8. Wanneer kunnen we van jou een grote (album promotie) tour verwachten?
Well, I have many dates in mind, but me and my management team are still brainstorming which moment will be the right moment to release an album, but it will be in the near future.
9. Zie jij jezelf als voorbeeld voor jongeren?
Throughout life, I’ve learned that each one teach one, meaning I can learn from a younger person than me and vice versa.
10. Waar haal jij je inspiratie vandaan?
I take my inspiration from life, all my song topics are about things you go through in life.
11. Wat betekent RastaFari voor jou?
Rastafari is for me a journey to the spiritual truth and has influenced me to always keep it real and that’s why I always keep it real in my songs and everything I do.
12. Wat kunnen we nog allemaal verwachten van Smiley in de toekomst?
You can expect a lot of great music, shows and of course I can’t do it without the support of my fans, so keep on supporting the movement.
13. Bedankt voor dit interview Smiley. Heb je nog iets wat je kwijt wil aan de bezoekers van Jahlove.web-log?
My motto is: Music is a mission and not a competition. Every artist has his own addition to the scene, so keep on promoting the vibes!!!!
