Don Carlos is the link between reggae’s golden past and the present. As one of the funding members of Black Uhuru, he helped shape the sound in the 1970s with his warm, smooth vocals on the iconic Love Crisis album (later known as Black Sounds of Freedom). When he moved on to a solo career, he proved he could carry that same energy on his own. Albums like Suffering, Harvest Time , and Day to Day Living established him as one of the most recognizable voices in roots reggae, with lyrics centered around love, spirituality and survival.
Despite bootlegs, the loss of musical partners and the unpredictable nature of the music industry, Don Carlos has remained consistent, continuing to tour, write and sing with the same laid-back charm and dreamy melodies that made him a standout in the 1980s. With a voice so smooth it still moves generations of fans, it’s easy to forget how long he has been active. He’ll be proving that again on Sunday, April 26, in Effenaar’s Main Hall alongside the Massive Genda band..
