Released today April 20, The Ganja Collection sees Etana leaning into a concept from the very first track. No detours, no side paths. The album stays in its lane throughout, building a consistent mood around herb culture without overcomplicating it.
The slow opening track “Sensemilla” sets the tone early, easing you into the album and lifting you straight into a listening high from the first moments.
Etana released this collection in celebration of 420, the day that has grown into a global moment for herb connoisseurs. In that sense, the project sits right in line with reggae’s long-standing connection to cannabis culture, while also reaching beyond the core reggae audience.
There is also a spiritual layer present. We were pleased to see “Mt. Zion” included on the album, her collaboration with Cold Fever, a track that goes back to 2015 when World A Reggae created the single cover for its original release. Its presence here adds a deeper connection to the project.
At the same time, the album keeps things compact. With only a handful of tracks, it feels more like a themed collection than a full journey, again, staying within its lane from beginning to end. By the time it’s done, you might also feel like you’re fully up to date on the various herb strains out there.
And then there is Etana’s voice. Her smooth and controlled delivery brings a different feel to the subject matter. Hearing her sing about ganja in that soothing tone adds its own kind of high to the listening experience. I would not have minded if “Ganja Lovers” and “Ganja For You” with I-Octane had been present on the album too. Two Good Draws was a bit much…:)
Still, it also touches on something familiar. Even if it can sometimes feel repetitive or tied to stereotypes, the connection between herb and reggae has always been there, and projects like this show that it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. All Herbalists….Enjoy!
